End straight-ticket voting!

HB 70, sponsored by Representative Arent, would eliminate straight-ticket voting in Utah elections. This bill would remove the box on ballots that enable voters to vote entirely for either Republican or Democrat candidates. With this change, voters can still align with one party for every vote, but they cannot do so unless they mark each individual box. Currently, county clerks are asked more questions about the straight-ticket option than any other part of the ballot. This confusion often keeps people from voting in nonpartisan races, since they assume their party selection covered the entire ballot. Straight ticket voting is also dangerous to the democratic process, as it encourages thoughtless partisan alignment. Elimination of this outdated process will promote election of qualified candidates and eliminate confusion among voters.
